Several and It

It seems to me that at least at this Santa Fe, NM casino, there are a lot of under-trained dealers and a lot with bad habits.

Lets start with "Several"...

Every time certain dealers need to specify Seven dollars, whether it be exactly seven dollars or Twenty Seven Dollars, they Refuse to say "Seven" and replace the word with "Several"
For example fellow on my side has a 3-dollar hard 6, which rolls, and these dealer will say:

Pay twenty-several dollars to you're third.

WTF?!?!?!?

On to "IS"...

What IS? The point is the only thing that IS! Not to these weirdos!
Let's say a player throws in a red chip ($5 Value) and asks for all of the hard ways 1 dollar each.
The player is due $1 change now. So this stick person will repeat the bet, set up the bed and direct this statement to me:

One is, to you your first.

Still, I have the same response WTF?!?!?!?!?!

These dealers make me twitch!

One more pet peeve, Slamming the stick.
There is one very particular dealer who does this on many occasions.
For instance, after the dice roll, as soon as they settle and he is about to call them, he smacks the stick onto the table.
Another instance, when he's about to say "One is, to your first." he smacks the stick down right in front of the player due one-dollar change.

This is discourteous and rude, not to mention annoying - and this one I have brought up to a box person or 2, who i dont think has brought it up. This is just as bad as slamming chips down on the table, payoffs should not ever make a noise!

I know for a long time i moaned n groaned about players, but now its these dealers...
I might even come back and bitch a little about some of the supervisors too, not yet tho!

Nice to see you blogging again. ; )
I can feel your pain when it comes to working with inept craps dealers/crews. That whole stick thing is rediculous and sounds like they let it go on too long for that person to change on their own. I remember when someone would do that and scare the beejeezus out of me and the players on my side and looking for an opportunity to pay them back in kind when I got to be stick. You figure that the box or pit bosses would say something because that is both rediculous to fellow workers and players alike. As far as those other rediculous "payoff" comments, all I can say is good luck and don't let them suck you into making the same calls. lol
Hope you and Scott are doing well. Sounds like things are settling down so enjoy the winter that will be making things nice and cozy.

pumakid!!!! soo good to hear from you! i think about you ever time i make coffee and or walk thru the front door and step on my welcome mat! :)

yeah there are a lot of bad habits lingering around the craps table, i hawk the dice but only becuase i can not usually hear the stick person over the live bands :(

O'shaes all over again! why must there be live music ever where i go! i almost am loosing my appreciation for live music, just because it gets on my nerves! when i was younger it gave me chills and i loved it, even the damn high school garage bands i groupied...now i might wanna bead the band with their instruments...maybe, well ok not all of them :) how about just the sounds techs who cant equalize well and make it so all you hear is the drums or some shit and you may see a lead singer but not hear him!

Sounds like you might as well have a chat with the supervisors now about your imparting some wisdom or posting something in the break room or whatever.

>they Refuse to say Seven and replace the word with Several
Sounds ridiculous. What should be said? Players generally know not to utter the word 7 unnecessarily. But its better to be specific and precise than engage in some artful nonsense that simply confuses and annoys.

>One is, to you your first.
One is due to your first?
One is owing to your first?
One is coming to your first?
Sure: avoid the 'due' as confused with 'two'. Avoid the 'coming' as confusing with a come bet.
Why not a simple 'give one dollar to your First'? I think you better tell them what the correct terminology is, they are not going to learn it otherwise.

>Slamming the stick.
Oh thats easy!! Just tell them about the time a stick man did that when one of the players was a retired proctologist and security didn't get there in time to stop it from happening. That will stop the stickman from getting overly annoying!

I found the source of "several" and she is a very experienced dealer from detroit. her theory is that saying "seven dollars" will jinx a hot roll. and my theory is "too damn bad" !!!

"one is..." my cure seems to be working, when sealers say this i look at them with question and say "one change?" and so they correct them selves, point the stick to the player due one change and and say it "one change"

Well, I guess even the experienced dealers can have a difference of opinion.
I think that being precise trumps everything and avoiding annoyances or distractions is a fine goal. BigRed exists so as to avoid a player UNnecessarily uttering the dreaded word, but a non-gratuitous use of the word will not be the end of the world for the players.
I guess I could live with hearing the word several all the time but I sure would find it annoyingly foolhardy. Sometimes Political Correctness is simply annoying.
